On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the Alzheimer Society of Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk, Hamilton, and Halton, hosted a workshop with guest speakers Dr. Tricia Woo and Dr. Anthony Levinson from McMaster University.  The topic was “Demystifying Genetics.”  The takeaway message from the evening was that most dementias do not run in families or have a strong genetic cause.  Routine genetic testing is not recommended.  There are many things one can do to lower their overall risk for dementia such as participating in physical activity, following a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet, and being socially involved.  Even with genetics as a risk factor, you still benefit from a healthy lifestyle.
